Backstory:

Before the High King Tenzu IV rose to power, a catastrophic invasion of Neogi tore through Chandri from the astral plane creating absolute havoc. When King Tenzu finally drove back the Neogi, he made a decisive ruling to seal the borders between Chandri and the astral plane, locking down travel to prevent future incidents.

In the earlier Divisions, before the invasion, travel between Chandri and other worlds was common. The Owlins of Strixhaven possessed a thirst for knowledge that drove them beyond their home world. They established outposts across various planets in the material plane, each dedicated to studying different cultures, religions, and ways of life. Feather-Hoot Outpost was created on Chandri, built in The Emerald Vale just outside the city of Silverbrook. The Owlins, though usually private in their affairs, created a new and unique method of cultural study. They began integrating newly hatched Owlins into the societies they researched, allowing the young to grow up immersed in these foreign places. It was an ambitious program, and one that required great sacrifice from Owlin parents.

Dusk Dawn Silvertail of Strixhaven and Zephyr Archivus Silvertail of Strixhaven were two highly regarded researchers, brilliant minds committed to understanding Chandri’s people. When Dusk laid an egg, a rare and precious event among Owlins, she and Zephyr adorned it with trinkets from the natural world around Feather-Hoot: acorns, cedar fronds, flower petals, and seashells. They read stories from Strixhaven to the egg, including texts of astral physics, alchemy and high calculus. They carved intricate magical runes into the shell itself, though the true nature of these runes would not be understood by the other Owlins at the outpost. The egg was treasured, loved, and named Echo Dawn Silvertail, carrying forward the matriarchal Owlin tradition of taking the first name of Dusk’s own mother, Dawn, as the middle name.

Then the Neogi came.

The invasion struck without warning. A Neogi vessel crashed near Feather-Hoot Outpost, sending debris raining down onto the lush forest. As burning wreckage and splintered wood fell onto the outpost, Dusk and Zephyr threw themselves over their precious daughter’s shell. The branch and ship debris crushed them instantly.

The surviving Owlins of Feather-Hoot gathered the other eggs and fled through the astral plane back to Strixhaven. All except Elder Quillon, a scholarly Owlin who had devoted his entire life to the outpost. He was old, set in his ways, and couldn’t bear to abandon his life’s work. He stayed behind to salvage what he could, planning to restore Feather-Hoot once the danger passed. He didn’t know the borders would soon close after High King Tenzu the Fourth comes to power

After several days of hiding while the invasion raged and then moved on, Quillon emerged to retrieve the bodies of the fallen. Among the wreckage of crushed wood and twisted metal, he saw a Owlin egg that was left behind. It was beautifully engraved with glowing runes which he could not read. He immediately recognized it as Dusk Dawn Silvertail of Strixhaven and Zephyr Archivus Silvertail of Strixhaven’s egg. It must have been lookover during the Owlin retreat.

Quillon was thrilled and terrified. He had never raised a child and had no desire to start. He was a scholar, not a parent. But he couldn’t leave the egg. He made his way to the nearby Imperial Arcane Academy, hoping they could help. On the Academy grounds, he found Miriel, a wood elf inspecting the damage to the flora from the invasion with a heavy sigh. Quillon explained his situation, showing her the ruin-carved egg, her eyes widened at the glowing engravements, and she immediately led him to Head of the School of Divination, Mokato.

Mokato examined the egg with growing fascination. The runes were chronurgy magic! Echo’s parents hadn’t just protected their egg with their physical bodies, they had created a temporal stasis field, delaying the hatching for their daughter to survive the impact of the crash. But had they simply cast a spell on the egg or had they passed something deeper to their child? And for how long was the delay for?

Mokato agreed to keep the egg safe and wait for it to hatch and to raise Echo as his one with Elder Quillon as a guardian. Unfortunately, the egg seemed to never hatch. Years and years have passed. Elder Quillon eventually passed away but before doing so, he gave Echo the final part of her name. She was not “of Strixhaven” like her parents as she would never see that world. She was born here, in the ruins of hope and scholarship, the last Owlin to hatch at a place that no longer served its purpose. She was Echo Dawn Silvertail of Feather-Hoot, and that name meant something. Among Owlins, names carry power and history. Hers carried loss, love, and a legacy she was only beginning to understand.

Hundreds of years later, Mokato made his routine egg check. Before entering the chamber, he heard quiet chirping! There, in a pile of shattered eggshell engraved with glowing magical runes, sat a tiny floofy Owlin hatchling. Echo has finally hatched!! Mokato kept the shell fragments and was able to discern that Echo’s parents unfortunately did not have time to put a timer on the protection runes as they cast this spell in a rush during the crash. The default on the time runes was set to 500 years

Together, he and the Academy staff raised her as their own, with Miriel often caring for the young Owlin. Growing up, Echo was always drawn to the woods, finding comfort in the trees that surrounded both the Academy and the Emerald Vale where Feather-Hoot Outpost stood in quiet ruin. She was the only Owlin at the school, an outsider among the other students. At school, Echo proved average in most magical studies. She wasn’t a prodigy nor was she particularly gifted. But when she began studying the astral plane, desperate to understand the world her people came from and the barrier that separated her from them, something clicked. Time flows differently in the Astral Sea. The concepts fascinated her in a way nothing else had.

When Echo successfully cast her first chronurgy spell, Mokato knew his gamble had paid off. Her parents hadn’t just saved her with time magic, they had passed down something to her in her lineage, an affinity for time manipulation.

Now, years later, Headmaster Mokato has called upon her. The Time Council has foreseen prophecies about the Cult of the Comet, as a threat that could destroy everything. During a long summer night and a long divination trance, he had seen The Sea Wolf and its adventuring party on a quest to stop the Cult. The Imperial Arcane Academy has no warriors, but Mokato believes a young time wizard like Echo could be invaluable to those fighting this threat. Echo accepted the quest, but not just for Mokato’s reasons. She has her own questions to answer about her lineage and the Cult of the Comet maybe be part of the puzzle.

Echo’s Personal Goals Here are some goals that would be deeply personal to Echo beyond stopping the cult:

  • Understanding her lineage’s magical properties
  • Recreate or fully understand the chronurgy spell her parents used to save her o She wants to know: were they just skilled mages, or was there something special about their love that made the magic work?
  • Investigating the Sealed Borders, could she travel to Strixhaven and maybe meet her grandmother? o Is there any way to communicate across the barrier, even if travel is impossible? Perhaps the Cult knows?
  • What if the Cult of the Comet’s actions could reopen the astral borders? (This creates a moral dilemma—does she want that?)
  • Finding Other Owlins
  • Restoring Feather-Hoot’s Purpose
  • Why did her parents name her Echo specifically? Does her name itself carry power, as owlin tradition suggests?
